More Amazing Dioramas

Image
Tessa did a great job of creating several different structures for her Little House using popsicle sticks. I also liked how she included a wagon. Isaiah had a good idea of using his own building blocks and toys to make the Little House and to show the characters from the book and the animals.  I really liked the way that Tiana G. made her diorama using some of the toys and other materials she had available at her house. Look at little Baby Carrie as Wonderwoman!

Little House Dioramas

Paris did a great job here of creating a nice room for the family, with a popsicle stick wall, which even has a door in it, to separate off the stable where the animals live. We all know that Marcos is an excellent artist, and is able to draw things in a very lifelike way. He used his artistic skills to draw figures of some of the characters in the book. Derek 's diorama is very colorful. He and his mom had a great idea to look online for stuff that they could use, and look what they found! Some ready-made cut-out figures of the characters from the book. Santi 's diorama is super-impressive. Check out how he used popsicle sticks to design the furniture, like the bed and the chair. He also included a fireplace and a stable for the animals. His Little House even has a set of stairs! Kaely chose to make her diorama to show the scene where the children make "snow pictures." Here is what she said: "I picked this scene because I think it is

Works by Derek and Isaiah

Here is Derek's comic strip for Little House in the Big Woods. I liked how he labeled all the stuff in the family's house. This is a very nice picture Isaiah made. We have so many good artists in our class.  I know we've posted this one before, but I took another look at this drawing that Derek did from awhile back, and it's really creative!

Stories from old-timers and Picasso-inspired artwork

Image
For the Little House in the Big Woods assignment the other day, students interviewed their older family members and told their stories from days long ago. Look at these pictures, which show the area in Arroyo Seco where Derek's grandma grew up. Another assignment we did from the book was to create a comic strip showing one of the do-it-yourself projects that the family did in the story. Here is Kyla's drawing of the way that Ma made their lamp so pretty.  We also made paintings inspired by the modern artist Pablo Picasso, and talked about what "abstract art" means. Here is what Santi said about it: " Abstract means different. It is your own thoughts about something. It is something that is different to everyone. Something that makes you use your imagination."  Kaely made a really nice Picasso-inspired Art piece. Picasso's cubist art would use different colors and shapes to show different things. I would say Kaely made great use of color

Inspired artwork

It was great seeing most of our class on the call the other day. Some people have done inspired artwork at home that I'm sure even Picasso would be proud of. Riley did a really cool thing with an assignment we had from Charlotte's Web, look at his strange pet shop, unfortunately closed for now. Derek made an amazing Picasso piece. I can picture this work appearing in a museum. Here is Marcos's Picasso piece. Paris choose some lovely colors for her artwork. Paris also did very nice work creating the comic strip for this week's reading assignment. This shows us how the mom in the story colored the butter yellow. Take a look at Kyla's Picasso piece. Do you think she did a good job at showing "emotionless"? Kyla also got creative at home by making her own homemade scale for this week's math assignment.  Marcos made an excellent scale too. It's good to know what we can do if we ever need to measure things at home.

Book report, Easter decorations, Science experiments

Image
People did some amazing work on last week's assignments, which were the book report for Charlotte's Web and the Webquest on Fractions and Measurement. Some of our classmates also shared their Easter decorations and their Science experiments, in which they used their measurement skills to see how much salt they had to add to water to make an egg float. One person also showed us a cool thing he did at home with his toy cars, as well as a nice Moon Phase poster. Take a look at Kaely's Plot Structure poster for Charlotte's Web and the cool spider web she made: Some of our classmates made beautiful decorations and artistic projects over the Easter holiday. I was very happy to receive this beautiful Easter card from Gracen over the holiday.  Gracen got 10 extra credit points for his egg experiment. I wonder how much salt he had to add to make this egg float? Kaely said it took her 6 tablespoons to get the egg to float.  We all know that

Paris's moon project, Isaiah's meal, Marcos's floating egg

Our class had their first online conference call on Wednesday. It was fun talking to classmates and playing games like 20 questions and magic 8-ball. I hope that more people can be on the call next Wednesday. Here is a picture taken by Derek's mom of the call. Hi Miguel! Paris did an amazing job on her Moon Phase project. Look how bright the colors are here! Isaiah got to work on his cooking project by making a delicious seafood dinner, with some chocolate cookies for dessert.  Marcos tried the Science experiment where he added salt to water until he was able to make an egg float. I wonder how much salt he had to add to the water?

Marcos's Moon Phase project and answers to Charlotte's Web questions

Image
Marcos did an amazing job at creating artwork showing the phases of the moon: Also, please check out some of the great answers I received to Tuesday's Charlotte's Web questions by Derek and Isaiah: Think of a place that is much different during the nighttime than it is during the day. Describe all the difference between night and day in this place in detail (1/2 a page). I chose a school. During the day  there are lots of kids and teachers in the classrooms, lunch rooms, hallways and playground . In the night if there is nothing going on, then it's just empty and dark. There is no teaching going on, there is no playing or kids answering questions. Everyone is at home .  The lunch room is empty and there is no smell of food being served. The parking lot of the school is very empty and during the day it is full of cars from teachers and parents especially during pickup and drop off. A beach is different between night and day. It is different because it is peace

Nice spider webs and baking projects

Image
Before you look at some photos of what are classmates have been doing, you may read this short story, conveniently censored by the author himself, which Sebastian wrote about how the planet Pluto came to be: Pluto and Mars have always been enemies. One day the martians went to Pluto and tried to take it over but Pluto knew what mars was doing and set up a bunch of catapults and started firing them at the martians but only twenty martians got hit and then... this part is too violent to hear so we are blocking it out... and that is why pluto is so small Derek chose some really cool colored pipe cleaner materials to make his spiderweb. Derek and his family also made some beautiful bread the other day. Looks very tasty! Gracen also made a cool spider web. I like how no two people's spider webs are the same. And here is Gracen's mobile. It looks like he used some Lego toys to hang from his mobile.
