Off to a Great Start!
Our second week of school was fun for everybody. Some of the highlights were our PE classes, in which the students learned how to play together as a team in games like soccer and basketball. The students also created a Class Charter this week, which is an agreement we all will make to help and support each other in order to make this the best school year we've ever had. In the coming weeks, we have some exciting field trip experiences coming up. Stay tuned for those....
Literacy: We read a story as a class this week about a goat who gets a special gift from a tiger. It's called a Banza, and it helps the goat to find the strength in her heart to overcome her fears. We also finished a book called, How to Be Cool in Third Grade, and did our own assignment about why reading is cool for us. We started new 3rd grade activities like cursive writing, which we will be working on all year, and Dictado exercises, which test both our listening and spelling skills. In the last week of August, we will continue reading a new book together called Stone Fox, as well as building up our Reading Tracker lists with books that we've read on our own. In Spanish, the students learned how to say "My name is," etc. Next up is numbers and days of the week.
Math: We have been reviewing 2nd grade math concepts and introducing a few new ones too. We talked about place value, greater than and less than, and finally, carrying over when doing multi-digit addition. The students have done a great job so far at challenging themselves and retaining the information they learned last year in order to start building new knowledge through our 3rd grade curriculum. For the last week of August, we will continue using counting blocks to help us get a better grasp of what we are actually doing when adding and subtracting, and we'll be dealing with some more complex sets of problems involving place value.
Science / Social Studies: Everybody knows that the sun doesn't move through the sky, but it's actually the earth that's moving. The 3rd grade studied this concept and found out it was true for themselves by making their own sundials, which showed us the directions that the sun rises and sets in, and also how shadows appear longer in the morning and evening and shorter in the middle of the day. In social studies, we talked about the country of Haiti, because that is where our story for the week came from. We looked at a map to see where our country is in relation to the rest of the world. We also talked about the countries where Spanish is spoken throughout the world as part of our ongoing Spanish lessons.
Art: The 3rd graders showed their art skills with some water-coloring of abstract designs, and some beautiful pictures that represented their interests and the people who they care about. The pictures are up on our wall and in the hallway outside our room, so stop in and see them if you have a chance. In the coming weeks, we will get to use our creativity in making costumes for the GlamTrash art show. We will also keep drawing and painting in order to solidify math concepts, such as time and multiplication, and we'll be using our artistic skills to add further dimensions of expression to our writing assignments.
