Spring is right around the corner as Skiing and Skating Club come to an end
Our Wednesdays have been a bit different since the beginning of the year, as half the class has been going up to the Ski Valley for Ski Club and the other half has been going to the Youth and Family Center for Skating. The students have been lucky to have the opportunity to learn and practice more coordinated physical activity. The skaters have all improved drastically over the five weeks that we have been doing Skating Club, and from what I hear, the skiers have all gotten a lot better too, in addition to being out in the mountains and having fun with their friends. Thanks to Kaely's mom, Sari, for providing the photos of Ski Club, and thanks as always to Ms. Yavanne for the skating photos.
One of the most exciting things that has happened in our class recently is that we have had Sarah, the mother of our newest student Riley, come into our class on Thursdays for special lessons on music and in particular, wind instruments. She brings a great deal of musical experience with her, and we have all been excited to learn some new things about music, such as the notes in a musical scale. In these photos, she shows us some of the flutes from her collection. The students were especially interested in the wooden Native American flute.
It has been awhile since I've uploaded any photos of our cleanup time in a blog post, but I thought it was about time that we gave props to our class Photographer, who in the last week has captured several images of people doing their class jobs in the afternoons. Here you can see our class Sweeper and Chair Stacker hard at work. The Photographer also got a nice shot of our recent art pieces, which were based on Van Gogh's Starry Night. As you can see, a lot of people opt not to wear shoes in the classroom during the mud season!
In Literacy over the last couple weeks, the students have been reading poetry from different states around the country. We have been advancing our geographical knowledge, as well as our awareness of the cultural differences between all the various parts of America. Reflecting some of the different styles of poetry that we have been reading, the students wrote their own poems about their home town, Taos NM! It is apparent that we have some very innovative young poets in our class.
