Working from Home

What a surprise to come back from Spring Break and find out that school is cancelled for the next 3 weeks! Everyone seems to be getting used to the new way we will have to be learning as long as school remains closed. Thanks to everyone who came in to pick up a work packet. And thanks to those of you students who continue working hard at home.

This week we started reading Charlotte's Web as a class. This is a great story to read in the Springtime because the farm animals in the story are all coming out of their Winter slumbers and are excited about meeting their new friend, Wilbur the pig. So far we have read 4 chapters already, and we have seen Wilbur move into his new home on Zuckerman's farm.

We have also started a new science-baking project, which includes making a starter for sourdough bread. We should be able to bake the bread in a few weeks. The students mixed 1 part flour with 1 part water, and a few people had some good ideas about what will happen to the mixture. Marcos said, "I think the flour will suck up the water." Tiana G. said, "I think the flour is going to explode." Paris said, "I think the jar will build with pressure and the flour and water will expand." Kaely said, "I think the pressure will build up and bubbles will form and the water will disappear into the air." And Derek said, "I think the flour and water will expand and grow. I've made sopapillas before and I think something like that will happen." Interesting ideas everyone. I will be curious to see what happens.
