Do-It-Yourself projects
The Do-It-Yourself projects inspired by our reading of Little House in the Big Woods were a huge success. Every year the 3rd graders come up with amazingly creative ideas for projects, but this year's class was particularly outstanding. Not only did the work very hard at making things like they did in the "old days," but they also made posters showing what they did and gave very informative presentations about the process.
Delfino made a rolling toy car out of many different scrap materials.
Odin went out into the woods and using this tool collected sap from trees.
Violet made her own dress. She cut out the cloth and sewed it herself.
Arielle very skillfully made corn husk dolls. She explained the whole process well in her presentation.
Scarlett made some delicious taffy. The class was very appreciative when she shared it.
Skye made her own "Little House." It was incredibly detailed and true to the house in the story.
Marehly made her own board game. Her classmates were grateful when they all got to play together.
Ellie made two things inspired by scenes in the story: maple candy and a hand-sewn quilt.
Brittney made a yummy treat for her classmates: peanut butter bumblebees!
Araceli made a quilt, and she even dressed the part of Laura Ingalls for her presentation!
Elsie sewed her own teddy bear. She also made creative posters showing all the steps in the process.
Esteban demonstrated his creative ingenuity by making a lightning rod.
Isabella made her own leather bracelet. Her poster explained the process very clearly.
Bella cut wood to make a bow and arrow. A very useful item for survival in the Big Woods!
Jacoby made a tiny doll of such high quality she got asked, "How much could you sell it for in a store?"
Naomi made candles and maple candy, both of which she generously shared with her classmates.
Benito made a clay cup. He shaped it on a wheel, fired it in a kiln, and painted it himself!
Jayleigha made a delicious type of candy out of fresh grapes that no one had tried before.
Vivienne made dolls out of yarn. She made 5 of them to represent the entire Ingalls family!
Charley made a lovely patchwork quilt. She went through many steps to assemble it so well.
