Great work on the Little House final projects and the biography assignments

We have some beautiful student work this week coming from our Little House in the Big Woods and our Biography assignments. First up, everyone should check out Kyla's video, which is on Google Classroom, posted May 8th. I couldn't upload it to the blog, but I think everyone should watch it because she shows us how she made tie-dye clothes for her project. 

Kaely made a doll, just like Laura and her sister did in Little House in the Big Woods. I wonder if girls in the 1800s could have imagined hair this awesome and imaginative! 



One of the parts to the Biography assignment required students to make portraits of the people who they wrote about. Paris chose a very interesting historical figure, Cleopatra the Queen of Egypt, who lived over 2000 years ago!


Here you can see Derek hard at work for his final project. He chose to make a planter box, which I'm sure would have been a very useful thing for the family to have in the Big Woods. I hope Derek will tell us all about his project at our Midweek Meeting on Wednesday.


Kaely also made a nice drawing for the self-portrait section of the autobiography assignment. I like the different colors she used to frame her drawing and the name in cursive writing at the bottom.

Congratulations once again to Caira for winning the Smelly T-Shirt Reading Contest in the Fall. Acknowledgement is also in order for Abby, Willow, and Analyia, who came in close runners up.  Fortunately for everyone, our class is starting up a new Reading Contest for the Spring. The theme is a Reading Marathon. We are now writing our reading logs on "running feet," which we are going to put up around the school and see how far we get! Students will continue to earn stickers, which they can put on their marathon avatars.  Our class went on a fantastic field trip last week to the Talpa Community Center. We got to visit the library, where the students explored new books and read to each other. Thanks to the librarian there, Ms. Lucita, we also got to make tortillas. They came out so tasty, and the students enjoyed eating them for lunch paired with butter, peanut butter, and fresh jam. Acequia field trip and US State projects

The 3rd grade worked very hard on their US State poster projects. The students created some awesome artwork, and did a great job standing up in front of the class presenting. We also had a field trip recently to the Taos acequia system. The class had a fantastically fun time watching the water flow through the ditches.  The moment when we opened the sluice for the first time this season! We saw some cool wildlife, including peacocks! The class maintained good order while out in the field, as usual. Trout Release and Hiking Field Trip

It was sad to have to say goodbye to our trout last week, but we think they are better off in their natural habitat. And speaking of habitats, our class was fortunate enough to go with Rivers and Birds to the Columbine-Hondo trail in Red River, where we learned the basics about enjoying wilderness areas responsibly.  Before releasing the trout, our class shared what they had learned with the Kindergarten.  Habitats. A trout's diet. Stages of life of trout. The Nitrogen Cycle. Getting them out of the tank wasn't as easy as we had anticipated.  Hanging out by the fishing pond.  Getting ready to throw out handfuls of food to big, hungry trout.  Getting our feet wet for the actual release.  Lucky catch!
