Loads of Cool Projects as We Near the End of January

Image
We've almost reached the end of January, and the class has accomplished a great deal this month. In this post, you will see pictures of the work we have done in art, science, performing arts, STEAM, and some of the plain old fun we have had in the 3rd grade! Our class had a visit by Lee Shawver, who is an expert in spoken and written Chinese. Here we are practicing our Chinese calligraphy in anticipation of the Lunar New Year. In science, we have been studying water and climate. Here we are doing an investigation into how droplets of water form and move on different surfaces. The students wrote fantastic answers to the Focus Question for this investigation too.  Here is an activity we did in cursive writing, geometrical symmetry, and art all rolled into one! (Isn't it great going to an integrated art school!?) Check out our Cursive Monsters: Ms. Anandi has been hard at work getting the students ready for their theatrical performance, which will take place on March 28th (Mark yo...

Field Trip to State Capitol

Image
The TISA 3rd grade had a fantastic time and learned a lot on their recent field trip to Santa Fe. At the State Capitol building, we got to see where legislators make laws, and the governor enacts them. Then, we went to the New Mexico History Museum, where we searched to find artifacts from many time periods.                                             This is why it is called "The Roundhouse." Walking in an orderly line through the building. Looking down on the floor where the Senate meets. Hello from the Second Floor West Wing balcony! One of the amazing works of art at the capitol, a bull's head made of recycled materials. No lunch with the governor on this trip. Maybe next time! Going over the rules of the road before our walk through the Plaza. Happy to be at the New Mexico History Museum. Exploration activity - The Territorial Period The Spanish Period

Christmas Performance, Hanukkah Visit, and Winter Dance

Image
Our class practiced for week's in preparation for the Christmas Performance. Here are the students rehearsing their finale dance with Ms. Anandi. The Performance went phenomenally well. Thanks to Ms. Ali, Ms. Anandi, Christopher Heron, and Ms. Roe for all the help they gave us in preparing for it. And thanks to those who came to school to see it! During December, our class learned about Christmas but learned about other traditions as well. Particularly Hanukkah. We were fortunate enough to receive a visit from Rabbi Jack of Los Alamos, who read us a Hanukkah story, taught us about the tradition of the menorah, and along with his wife very generously brought dreidels for everyone! One of the highlights of the holiday season was definitely the Winter Dance. Ms. Sadie and Ms. Ali did a spectacular job of decorating the Multipurpose Room and providing music for the students to dance to.

Dental Hygiene Lesson and Christmas Cards

Image
Our class was lucky in the past week to receive a visit from Del's mom and Esteban's mom, who are both dental care professionals. They gave the class an important lesson about how to keep our teeth clean. They were even generous enough to bring goodie bags that contained toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste, brushing timers, and purple chewable tablets to show us how much plaque is on our teeth.  The class has been working on personalized Christmas Cards to send to loved ones far away. They have already made some beautiful designs, and they are going to be adding their own special poems to the cards before sending them off.

More Helper Projects and Thanksgiving Meal

Image
Before we left for break, the class joined the 4th and 5th grades for a fabulous Thanksgiving feast! Ms. Linda taught us proper table etiquette before we began eating, then we enjoyed each other's company over a delicious meal. Thanks again to those who contributed food.  We've had a few more fantastic presentations of the How to Be a Helper projects, inspired by Stuart Little. Jayleigha helped out the Kindergarteners by donating books to the class and reading to them. Naomi helped her younger brother by reading to him. Violet helped her mom with chores around the house. Delfino helped his grandmother remodel her house.  Our school had another Explora Science Night recently. This time they brought us activities to investigate how animals camouflage themselves to hide in different environments.

Helper projects and more

Image
The How to Be a Helper projects inspired by our reading of Stuart Little were a great success. The students came up with all kinds of generous ways to help people (and animals!). Here are the projects of the students who have presented so far.  Odin pulled in a big haul for his Coat Drive. Scarlett helped accustom stray cats to being with humans so they could be adopted. Xanti also helped animals. He organized a blanket drive for the animal shelter. Skye came up with a great idea of sending her greetings to a child at St. Jude's hospital. Charley offered her help to the Kindergarteners, helping them learn to read. Iz helped the community by donating books.  Brittany helped her dad, who works with all kinds of cool stones.  Ella helped out at the Love Apple by prepping tables. Vivienne planned to help her mom prepare for their family's Thanksgiving celebration. Theo helped a family friend by chopping and stacking firewood. On Veterans' Day, the class was very fortunate to ...
